Founded on principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all, the University of York opened in 1963 with just 230 students. In less than 50 years we have become one of the world's leading universities.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, York was named as the 8th best research institution in the United Kingdom, the Sunday Times university of the year in 2003 and Times Higher Education university of the year in 2010. In 2012, York was invited to join the Russell Group in recognition of the institution's world-leading research and outstanding teaching.

York has become one of the top ten universities in the UK for teaching and research – and is first in the UK and seventh in the world in the Times Higher Education world rankings of universities less than 50 years old.
